Lagos creates five new ministries

Lagos State Governor, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu has created five new ministries, while two others have been downgraded to departments in his recently constituted cabinet. The newly created ministries are namely economic planning and budget, home affairs, rural development, housing as well as establishment, while the former ministries of information and Women Affairs were down-graded to mere departments respectively.These bring to 14 the number of minis-tries in the state civil service which earlier had 10 before the latest development.

The creation of additional ministries by the governor was contained in a statement issued at the weekend by the deputy, Chief Press Secretary to the govermor, Mr. Lati Odusanya.The release also revealed that Tinubu has also assigned portfolio to the newly appointed commissioners.

They include Professor Yemi Osibajo (Justice), Mr. A. Olawale Edun (Finance), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso (Economic Planning and Budget), Mr. Kaoli Olusanya (Agriculture and Co-operatives).Others are Oladele Alake (Information and Strategy), Femi Lanlehin (Political and Legislative Powers), as well as Ms. Toyin Fagbayi (Women Affairs and Poverty alleviation). Also appointed are Alhaji Rafiu B. Tinubu as the Head of Service, while Alhaji Lai Mohammed was made Chief of Staff (govemor’s office) and Mrs. Seyi Williams became the new accountant general for the state.Similarly, the govenor has appointed Mr. Segun Ayobolu the newacting Chief Press Secretary.The statement further hinted that the commissioner, special advisers, head of service and other new appointees would be sworn in tomorrow by the governor at the state’s auditorium Alausa, Ikeja

Lagos State Governor, Senator Bola Tinubu has pledged that his government will build a democratic hall of fame in Lagos as a lasting monumental gift to Chief death anniversary was marked yesterday. M.K.O. Abiola whose first year Making the pledge at the 1st MKO Abiola Memorial 50 Lecture which hed at the national theatre, Lagos by Alex Ugwukah yesterday, Tinubu said that the site of the monumental edifice was yet to be determined.Tinubu, in his speech, Campaign for Democracy (CD) commended the efforts of organizing such a thoughtful event to mark the passing on of this “hero of democracy”.

He said the occasion further marked acelebration for the triumph of democracy in African’s most populous country.” He noted that the death of Abiola clearly marked a sharp turning point in the history of the country, “given its cause/direction and the eventual precedents and antecedents for the achievement of democracy in Nigeria.”In the main lecture entitled: Abiola and June 12: Nigeria’s Present and Future”Chief Frank Kokori, the guest lecturer, recounted his prison days and incarceration of Abiola, Olisa Agbakoba, Dr Beko Ransome Kuti and others in the struggle during the Babangida/Abachayears.

Kokori pointedout further that, without MKO and the June 12 saga, democracy will still have been unrealised given the evil intention of the looters whom we once counted as our leaders”.

Suit filed at an Ikeja High Court recently against Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State by some aggrieved members of Alliance for Democracy (AD) from Ajeromi Ifelodun, Amuwo-Odofin and Ojo Local Government areas, of the State over the constitutionality of the appointment of new commissioners for the state has been discontinued.This was sequel to a notice of discontinuance, filed on behalf of the applicants by their counsel, Mr Adetunji Orisalade,dated July 5 The said notice has also been Wednesday, July 7 1999 Pg. 5served on the attorney-general of the state, on behalf of the governor and other respondents in the suit.Though, the case was initially slated for yesterday, but it was adjourned to July 12, due to official engagements of the State chief judge.

No reason was given in the notice of discontinuance as to why the plaintiffs want to drop the action. The discontinuance is pursuant to Order 24 of the High Court of Lagos, Civil Procedure Law,(CPL) 1994.However, in an interview with the applicants’ solicitors and one of the applicants, Prince SUIT AGAINST TINUBU Tejumade had no choice than to respect the wish Durosinmi, they stated that though, of the party for the overall unity and interest of the entire party. Mamowora, Chief Agbaje and Apostle S.A. Akin-Aina Anthony Abiola-Johnson, Mrs Kemi Nelson, Mr Musiliu Obanikoro among others to withdraw the case from court.

4 companies to assist Lagos in refuse collection

FOUR construction companies namely, Berger Plc, Cappa and Dabelto, DTV and Fugerolle have decided to assist the Lagos State Government in clearing all the refuse dumps in various local government areas of the state.

The New Nigerian investigation confirmed that the decision taken by those four construction firms is to complement the services ofthe Lagos State Waste Man-(LAWMA) who ac-cording to privileged information have some constraints that is presently hindering their timely refuse disposal.

The New Nigerian While monitoring the environmental sanitation at Mushin Local government observedthe presence of men from Julius Berger who had already commenced the clearing of refuse at Baba Olosa Market in Mushin and also promised to continue working at the spot till when the area is free may amount to spread of epidemic in the area.

Alahaji Ganiyu solomon, the chairman of Mushin Local Government who spoke with the New Nigerian during the monitoring of the environmental sanitation, the effort of the firms exercise disclosed that came voluntarily as part of their contribution to the success of the on-going democratic rule in the state, and therefore assured that his administration in Mushin would give logistic support to the concerned firms when-ever they are called upon to do so.

Alhaji Solomon also told the New Nigerian that apart from the commitment of his government towards giving a good look to the area, he has also promised to revive all the grounded vehicles of the local government with adequate maintenance and this will be effectively monitored by his council.
