IT is my pleasure to welcome you all to this occasion of the signing of the Programme Implementation Agreement with UNICEF. I particularly welcome Top Officials from the B-Office of UNICEF, comprising Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Edo, Delta and Oyo States.
Globally, the twin problem now identified as militating against growth in developing countries is poverty and ignorance, as against arms and ammunitions, identified in 1945 when the United Nations was established. UNICEF at its inception has been in the vanguard of assisting children all over the world with its programmes on health and women development to escape the vicious cycle of poverty and ignorance.
In Nigeria, the country-based programmes include National Programme on Immunisation (NPI), Baby Friendly Initiatives, focused on Hospitals and Schools, Water and Environment Hygiene, Food Production, Processing, Storage and General Nutrition; Health and Basic Urban Services. The beneficiary States and Local Governments are expected to replicate and extend such services to other places within their areas of jurisdiction.
